EB 94 continues reforms

The new Methodologies Panel was announced at the 94th meeting of the EB. From now on, the panel consists of 12 permanent members and combines the expertise of the former Meth Panel and the Small Scale Working Group. Progress is being made in promoting use of the CDM. While the cooperation with a bank on refinancing had not proven successful, the development of a green bond-based CDM investment trust fund (Paris Climate Bond) shows conrete results. In the crowd funding sector, several support schemes have been launched in cooperation with two partners which have successfully raised money to enable recommissioning of two landfill gas projects in Colombia that had been stopped. Support for green bond programs using the CDM for the West African Development Bank (BOAD) and the East African Development Bank (EADB) has also been a success.

Also, turning attention to methodologies after a long break, the Board adopted a newly developed CDM methodology for sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) abatement in substations with gas insulated switchgear. The Executive Board also interacted with the co-chairs of the global DNA Forum, Anne Omambia (Kenya) and Laurence Mortier (Switzerland). The co-chairs emphasized that the CDM is still of importance for host countries. The DNAs ask for further simplification of the CDM guidelines as well as an international tool to improve visibility of sustainable development benefits.
